Copyright vs. Copyleft
Symbols of copyright and copyleft
One of the ethical issues that hasemerged in the digital age is intellectual property, given that online documentation, audiovisual materials and software products are vulnerable to piracy. All creative works are, in fact, given copyright protection as soon as they are released to the public without registration to protect the rights of their creators. Butthis was opposed by some people who sawrestraining access to every software or artistic work in the world as an “intellectual monopoly” and a lost opportunity to advance science. And this was when “copyleft” came in.
Under the copyleft concept, creators of software or artistic work allow other people to reuse or modify their products for non-commercial purposes. Copyleft is not totally the opposite of copyright, but a way of offering an alternative deemed useful to collective society more than the copyright system.
