‘KINCSEM- BET FOR REVENGE’, HUNGARY
Directed by Gabor Herendi
121 mins
SATURDAY, 19 MAY, at 4 pm
Our next film is a lavish and opulent Hungarian production, that has often been compared to the grand movies of Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann. Infact, it was the most expensive film made in the country, which turned out to be the biggest box-office success in Hungary too!
It’s also a unique movie for our Film Series, as it centres around the exciting world of horse-racing.
Infact, ‘Kincsem’ is the name of the most famous thoroughbred race horse in Hungary, which became a national icon (‘Kincsem’ means ‘My Treasure’ in Hungarian). It won fame around the world, for not losing a single one of its 54 races, in the 1870’s - a record that has still not been broken, globally. It’s still known the world over, as the ‘Miracle Horse’!
Many books and tributes have been written about the legendary horse, and it took the Hungarian Director seven years to write the script of this unique movie. The movie portrays the pulsating life of horse-racing, and within it, is woven a stormy love-story between two rivals, in the political fabric of the country.
In the riveting opening scene, a well-known aristocratic horse-trainer Sandro Blaskovich is shot dead by his former military comrade Count Otto von Oettingen, after the Hungarian Revolution. A witness to the murder, is Blaskovich’s young son Erno, who loses everything including his palatial family home, which now becomes the property of his father’s slayer.
The film jumps 20 years, when Erno has become a dandy and womanizer, who frequents the top brothels of the country. He is a happy-go-lucky man, even though he is always short of money.
Erno’s life changes, when he encounters Kara, the wild and spirited daughter of Count Oettingen, and Kincsem, a wild and seemingly untamable horse. How he ‘tames’ the horse and makes him a world-champion, and in the process, also falls in love with Klara, is what the movie portrays. There is also the theme of ‘revenge’ for his father’s death, which needs to be carried out, in the dramatic story.
The nerve-tingling horse-races are one of the many highlights of this Hungarian film, which was released around the world, and won rave-audiences everywhere.
The last scene is rivetting as the first one, when Erno and Klara have to make choices, when they are faced with a life-threatening situation.
Hollywood Reporter: ‘Full of torrid passions, blazing saddles and thundering hooves,’
Filmtett, Hungary: ‘We’ve finally made a Hungarian version of the Hollywood blockbuster!’
The screening of ‘KINCSEM- BET FOR REVENGE’ is supported by the Embassy of Hungary, who will serve Snacks and Drinks, after the screening.
Ambassador of Hungary HE Dr Peter Jakab will introduce the film.
