About the Film
LAAPATAA LADIES The amusing, thought-provoking tale of two brides who are accidentally swapped and end up with the wrong bridegrooms delivers plenty of laughter and entertainment. Beneath the humor, however, lies a strong message about how the physical ghoonghat, or bridal veil, can conceal the bride’s emotions and intellectual motivations.
At its heart, this is a woman’s story, weaving multiple narratives through two ‘lost ladies’ who are vastly different from each other. Phool, the soft-spoken, seemingly helpless bride, gradually learns to become self-reliant. Pushpa, the strong-minded, independent bride, discovers the value of family love and support. The two bridegrooms too, have lessons to learn, as also the loud, outspoken police constable who judges their cases.
Laapataa Ladies is the second film by acclaimed indie filmmaker Kiran Rao, produced by Indian superstar Aamir Khan. Featuring a marvelous ensemble cast with many new faces, the film made waves internationally, winning awards at festivals around the world and being selected as India’s Oscar-nominated entry.
