About the Film
A Perfectly Normal Family (2020) follows what appears to be a perfectly ordinary family—filled with laughter, playful teasing, weekend football games, and cheerful home-video recordings. But everything changes in an instant when eleven-year-old Emma and her older sister Caroline are struck by shocking news: their parents are getting divorced, and the reason is that their father is transitioning into a woman.
Before the sisters fully grasp the situation, their father travels to Thailand for gender-affirming surgery and returns as Agnete, an elegant woman who joins the family holiday and introduces herself as their new “mother.” Emma, the younger daughter, struggles to understand the transformation, and the film portrays her emotional turmoil with remarkable tenderness and nuance.
The story follows the family’s journey through confusion, love, patience, and ultimately acceptance. Despite the upheaval, Agnete remains gentle, attentive, and committed to her children, grounding the film with a deep sense of humanity.
This film marks the director’s debut feature and is inspired by her own lived experience of having a father who transitioned. That personal truth shines through in the performances—particularly in Emma’s portrayal and in the role of Thomas (or Agnete), whose presence is both vulnerable and quietly powerful.
What the Press said
The Guardian: “The directness and honesty of the storytelling is really affecting.”
Variety: “An engagingly sincere picture of good people trying to negotiate barely charted territory to the best of their abilities.”
