Thailand Knowledge Park (TK park) joined forces with Samut Sakhon Provincial Administrative Organization and Samut Sakhon Knowledge Park (SK park) in organizing the “Talk, Play and Learn from Samut Sakhon Local Contents” activities at a launching function of the “Creative learning media with Samut Sakhon local contents” book series. The function aimed to introduce and familiarize the books to teachers and librarians before disseminating to children, youth, and the general public. After this function 3,150 copies of the book series would be presented by TK park to Samut Sakhon Provincial Administrative Organization for further distribution to all schools that participated in this activity.
Dr. Tassanai Wongpisetkul, the Deputy Director of the Office of Knowledge Management and Development and the Director of Thailand Knowledge Park (TK park), said that the local knowledge and contents developed for this book series represent another important mission of TK park in addition to the expansion of TK park’s living library model to regional and local libraries to promote the love of reading and learning among children, youth, and the general population. The ultimate goal of this project was to develop Thailand into a learning society on a sustainable basis.
The present “Local contents for creative learning media” book series is the second of its kind published by TK park in collaboration with local scholars and writers in incorporating local wisdom and everyday living with acceptable moral and ethical concepts as local contents of the learning media to be disseminated to all regions across the country. The first book series in this new form of learning media has the southern region’s local contents. TK park is currently working on the learning media with the local contents of the northeastern region and Chachoengsao Province. It is TK park’s policy to produce and disseminate learning media on local contents of all regions. Besides being useful for local children in each region, the book series will be used to educate students in other regions to have a better understanding of the culture and lifestyles of people in different regions.
Furthermore, Dr. Tassanai also mentioned that this book series was published with special consideration given to creative presentation of the materials in modern format with interesting pictorial illustrations. It was done with a specific group of children in mind, aiming to create reading/listening pleasure while at the same time allowing users to absorb the good information and regional tales with the goals of instilling within them the love and pride of their own region.
The “Creative learning media with Samut Sakhon local contents” series consists of four books: Sumut Sakhon, the Fun City; Fun Closed to Home at Samut Sakhon, Exploring Samut Sakhon, and Amusing Contents for Learning. They were published by TK park and were presented to SK park for further distribution to children, youth and the general public via schools in Samut Sakhon Province. All four authors of the book series were invited to a talk seminar titled “Creation of learning media on Samut Sakhon through local tales”.
A workshop on “Fun Ways to Use Learning Media: Decoding the Books on Samut Sakhon” was also organized for teachers and librarians so that they could organize additional activities to stimulate the love of learning and integration of knowledge in interesting ways. Workshop participants would be able to disseminate the Samut Sakhon local contents in this book series within their schools or communities as well as to provide a learning model for other regions. This book series is part of the creative effort to develop Thailand into a learning society on a sustainable basis.
