10 Years TK Dare to Dream
Have you ever played connect the dots?
The game consists of black dots with numbers spread all over a page. The player only has to connect the first dot to the second and so on. Once the player reaches the last dot, a picture will appear.
We try to say that this game is similar to the work of “TK park”,except that the dots are filled with youthful dreams. The aim is to make our young people “dare to dream” and then turn those dreams into reality.
On 24 January, 2005, TK park opened for business at its 3,700 square metre facility, so it could be said that this was the beginning for young people to materialise their dreams. The park is operated on a creative working philosophy to develop libraries into learning centres and to plant the love of reading into people of all ages. It provides space for children to simply roll around on or choose to learn through various multimedia. It is defined as the “Living Library”, a model of learning which goes hand in hand with happiness.
That was 10 years ago. There have been many dreams when the dots have been completely connected, and some are shown in the 10-year TK Dare to Dream exhibition.
22 January 22 – 1 February, 2015. Over this period, TK park celebrated its 10th birthday and its 10-year TK Dare to Dream exhibition served as a stage for young people of the new generation who have been through TK park. We got to see how the dots connectedover the past 10 years through learning activities, the primary focus of TK park.
10 good things at TK park exhibition
This exhibition chose 10 good things that happened in the last 10 years in TK park and put them into order in the exhibition room. It included molding young people into adults who have found their own paths in life, creating library networksbased on the pride of locals and their community, spreading knowledge through the network and being ready to expand the living library to every region. It reaffirmed TK park’s role in pushing for a Reading Society, both through paper books and multimedia, and lead to many projects during the past 10 years.These are part of it:
2005 – Build a living library as an up-to-date, funand supportive place of personal learning.
2006 – Create electronic encyclopedia on music, an information hub on music from all over the world.
2007 – Create Thai Kid Library, a learning centre and small library for children under 12.
2008 – Give a chance for writers to turn professional in Ibook TK Young Writer Academy Programme.
2009 – Start the TK beginner programme, allowing youths to prepare for a career path.
2010 – Launch the Read Me Egazine Programme to further the knowledge of young writers in the form if e-magazines.
2011 – Open an ASEAN museum exhibition to encourage young people to learn about the ASEAN countries.
2012 – Begin the Bright TK beginner festival programme one more time with opportunities for young people from 6 branches.
2013 – Further reading through the Read Thailand programme.
2014 – Learn without limits throughFacebook Instagram Twitter.
These will continue to spark dreams going into 2015
Those who attended the exhibition learnt about reading and different learning centres that have been collected in a form in which everyone participates, including stories of success of TK park youngsters, giant books, or different types of condensed libraries such as a cell phone library, satchel library or refrigerator library.
To increase knowledge
People attended talks and workshops run by celebrities from various professions who condensed all the important content into only a few hours. This included a talk on “Book Trend 2015” from masters in their fields such as Wanchai Tantiwitthayapitak, Deputy News Director of Thai PBS and a Sri Burapa Award winner, Siripong Witthayawiroj, former Publishing Editor, writer and translator, Tomorn Sukhapreecha, former GM magazine Editor, writer and translator. They talked about reading trends in 2015 from all over the world and in Thailand, as well as methods to successfully create a reading culture in various societies.
There were also relaxing talks suitable for the online society such as Book Talk which talked about the path of dreams which ends in the success of Bomb Kasidit, the owner of What kind of person dates a bear? page that has gained popularity in the social world and has been made into a book and LINE sticker.
It included a workshop,“Workshop on skills of the 21st century” by Piyaporn Manthanjit, the manager of Siam Commercial Bank’s Siam Kammajol Foundation. The objectives were to understand the skills of the 21st century and enable people to use those skills to further develop children and young people. Another was relaying content through story telling from the “Reader Theater” training by Associate Professor Pornrat Damrung, from the department of dramatic arts, faculty of arts, Chulalongkorn university and Nikorn Saetang, Silpathorn artist.
Edutainment, enjoyment which create inspiration
Enjoyment is crucial to the living library. The 10-year TK park exhibition made sure to bring in activities that were both fun and helped children to realise their dreams. This included the products from TK park such as listening to stories from Kid Storyteller, an adored yearly programme, or silent plays from “Baby Mime” where three actors create laughter and smiles even though they use no sound at all.
There were entertaining activities for older children such as live mixing music techniques by DJ Taidy, competing for attention with the B-Boy Dances.
Dr. Tassanai Wongpisetkul, Deputy Director of the Office of Knowledge Management and Development (Public Organisation) and the Director of Thailand Knowledge Park (TK park) said TK park was very committed to its mission of developing model learning centres, creating a love of reading and knowledge seeking in children and young people and to expand the associate network in order to develop learning centres that are in accordance with local context, to help make Thai society into a true learning society. What was shown in this exhibition should served as a clear answer that TK park is not just a living library but a library which gives life, which begins with the first starting dot and then keeps connecting until they become their own picture.
